Everyone has a favorite tool, and one of my favorites happens to be the spud wrench. An adjustable spud wrench to be exact. This is not the same spud nut wrench that you may have
seen referenced in the plumbing trades. For those of you unfamiliar with this wrench, the spud in spud wrench applies to most any tool with a tapered handle and a wrench on the other end. They come in a few different variations, open-ended, box end, and adjustable.

You’ll see them used extensively in industrial construction, specifically steel erection or piping. Iron workers, the ones they call Connectors, use them to line up bolt holes when they’re hanging steel. They also use what’s called a bull pin and sleever bar, but they’re not nearly as popular outside of steel erection. Pipers, fitters and welders, also use them to align flange holes for bolt-up or to split flanges.

Although I’m not recommending it, you can put a pipe on them to gain leverage with little fear of breaking them. I’ve also used them as hammers. I know, bad form but occasionally there comes a time when something just needs a little friendly persuasion and all you have on hand is a spud wrench! Even with all the abuse i’ve thrown at them, they still work flawlessly. They’ve been around forever and you’ll often see old ones that have been floating around different job sites for years. Of these, two brands most often show up; Klein and Wright. I know there are others and i’ve owned a couple of them, but the two highest quality versions, in my opinion, are from those two manufacturers.
