Forge welding in 1904

This 1904 film was made in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania at the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. It shows a group of men forge welding a large ring used in a generator. This was before the advent of electric welding machines. It was filmed by Billy Blitzer, and produced by the American Mutoscope And Biograph Company. This film and many interesting films are available at the Library of Congress’ American Memory Collection website. It’s also available here: You really should take a look at some of them-they offer a one of a kind glimpse into the past.

When i first posted this video, the only place it was available was on the library of congress’ own site. Things have changed now, and the L.O.C. is working on moving their videos to youtube. Now you can find them on their own youtube channel. So far there are only a few posted, but there are plans to add more.
