Performs and/or evaluates civil and structural tests and/or inspections such as soil compaction, moisture content, gradation, concrete slump, air entrainment, concrete compression, line and grade surveys, bolt torque, and concrete coring.
Monitors QA/QC documentation of destructive and non-destructive tests on structural materials through magnaflux, die-penetrant, radiographic or other means. Confirms proper documentation of welder qualification tests such as tension, bend, and raidographic in accordance with AWS.
Performs surveillance of underground piping system installations including tightness, bedding. and grade. Validates piping system installations through check of system design, hydrostatic testing and other methods of verification as specified.
Field checks placement/location of supports, reinforcing steel, embeds, anchor bolts, forming system, shoring, and subbase material before placement of concrete.
Performs continuing inspection of structural protective coatings to ensure thickness and coverage.
Provides general inspection of all contractor and subcontractor work to assure a safe and workmanlike operation.
Verifies foundation and structural coordinates and elevations. Has a good understanding of surveying.JOB QUALIFICATIONS
A high school education and seven plus years civil/structural inspection or Apprentice / Journey-man experience in civil construction are required.
A working knowledge of applicable materials, and civil installations and limited experience directly related to concrete foundations, underground utilities, piling, shoring, heavy civil excavation, pavements, structural concrete and structural steel on transportation is required.
An ability to read, interpret, verify and document conformance to the contract documents is required. An ability to perform quantity take-offs and measure them in the field is required.
Additional Requirements
Familiarity with ANSI. ACI, MDOT, AWS, and other applicable codes and standards related to civil/structural construction
Demonstrated success on the job as evidenced by prior satisfactory performance, acceptance of responsibility, and growth in previous position
Acceptable oral and written communication skills. Ability to properly document installation of work and contractors’ performance
Computer literate skills required. Must have the ability to prepare punchlists and inspection reports into a computer generated format
An Associates degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate technical field is preferred or field related experience.
MDOT. OR MARTCP Certifications required
